Wednesday – The day of Tech

Waking up in a forest halfway up a mountain, is a fantastic way to start the day. Stepping out into the sunshine with a breeze on your face and no need to rush, gives one time to consider all the beauty around. Driving to the top of the mountains through clouds to heights not often achieved there is a real sense freedom and awe.

But today is not about that, today is the day of technology and Silicon Valley provides it in bucket loads.

There was so much to see 20 sections on the history of computers from slide rules and abacus through super computers up to the tiniest little microprocessor’s used in everything today. All this came from “opportunity and preparation”. So given all this opportunity and time to prep why was so much of it mind boggling? And with all this opportunity why will I never be able to create such amazing products? Hopefully it’s because I (we all) have something to offer but maybe not in this field!

As we wandered around the exhibits there were other question: if R&D=£ why am I not rich? And if David is always attracted to space why is he not an astronaut? Somethings aren’t always as you expect!

Another interesting fact is that we Poynter’s have many of the products in the museum, so I am thinking of starting up our own museum. See if you recognise what you may have!

It made me think how lucky we are. One of the exhibits explained that today, even when we turn off our computers, phones, tablets, tv’s, etc we are still totally dependent on technology. My concern is does this mean we are less dependent on each other? Is that good or bad? As I see all the reminders of times spent with those I love, I know I am totally dependent on them.

There were two further exhibits: the first all about software. It demonstrated how technology was used to change facts such as photos being manipulated through software to make a person look better. But it also demonstrated the positive uses in medicine, with an MRI scanner pinpointing issues within the body. Like most things there are two sides good and not so good. Let’s ensure we seek the good in all we do.

Then we went into the last exhibit displaying autonomous vehicles, which may have helped later on the late night drive!

We were in the museum much longer than we expected and could probably spend two more days there!

On leaving we went for a walk round the block and for the next hour we came across

We were on the google campus! Who would know it a whole campus dedicated to the working school of google. 20 years ago you would never have heard of them and here they are the centre of technology, with their own city, their own bikes and so much more!

We eventually found our way out, but time had run away with us. Another place where we could have spent a few days.

It was late as we headed out across the mountains to find the hotel. But back to nature and beauty.

Eventually we found the hotel. How often do you enjoy yourselves so much that you forget to eat all day? We did! You will never guess where we ended up!?.

Unbelievable

Tuesday – Natural Wonders

The pacific

Today has been a day of natural beauty, although the skies were grey most of the day the sights were amazing. Richard if you ever read this, a great big THANK YOU.

As we stayed in a hotel on Lighthouse Avenue we started our day looking for a light house.

Good hearty start to the day

The lighthouse was not what I  expected. It was like everything else where we have been so far on this trip,  quaint and beautiful, so unlike other parts of America we’ve visited. It reminded me of the children at camp singing about the lighthouse, and remembering that we all see things differently. Even though the sign said closed the light continued to flash for all to see.

The coastal drive from Monterey to Carmel was totally inspiring. Starting on the coast with waves crashing on the rocks. How do the birds just sit as the waves crash around them. How often do we sit as chaos crashes around us? Why do the birds sit, but we jump in and become part of the chaos? How can we be more like those birds remaining calm and in control?

So much natural beauty that when we are busy we forget to notice. Around the peninsula there was an abundance of wildlife. We found my special place with amazing views out to sea.

My place

Having seen all this I joked, stating that my day would be complete if I saw a seal. Why I said this I don’t know but as we turned the next corner we came to ‘seal rock’ and there they were, seals. How does it work that when things are good they just get better?

Just waiting for you

The beauty carried on with every turn we took more and more amazing vistas and views.

Time for lunch and on Richards advice we went to the Hog’s Breath, Clint Eastwards watering hole! The food was amazing and the atmosphere so friendly. This must be what it feels like in the movies!!

We then drove into the Santa Cruz mountains. Breathe taking. Tall tall redwoods, and now the sun was shining.

There was even a castle next door to the small hotel which was set in the woods.

How very British

What an amazing day. Having time to appreciate what we have for no cost the earth in all its glory, is what we should focus on rather than the crashing waves of chaos.

Monday – the long haul

I remember what Monday mornings used to be

As we start our journey and sit on the M25, I consider all the benefits of waking at a reasonable hour, sharing breakfast and walking to work!

Time to go

Sitting in the lounge watching all the people. How lucky we are to travel the world, to go on holidays to have family and friends to enjoy all these things with each other.

How do planes get off the ground? They are so big. The human brain is so massive and still so under used. The inventions and things we are capable of never ceases to amaze me. My only question is why do we not use that immense brain power for good, what makes us selfish and want for self when others have created so we all benefit?

Beautiful

We are in the cutest hotel, in a quaint town called Pacific Drive and were greeted by deer!

Another question I have is about coincidence? Over the weekend we were getting ready for the new school team, cutting, laminating etc and putting together lanterns. I can’t remember when I last saw a lantern, probably when I made them at primary school, or possibly we made them at Brigade or junior craft club. We even tried putting the lantern for school up in the lounge over the light to test it out. Now here I am in a town thousands of miles away decorated with lanterns, in houses, on lampposts, in trees just everywhere. How amazing those small links in our lives that keeps everything connected.

Sunday – Friends and Family

At the beach

Last day with friends and family. Meeting up with old friends, as if we have not moved, what I call a “Sheppey Sunday” including dinner at dads and tea (biscuits) at grannies.

Health was a repeating agenda item. At what age did we start discussing ailments, well that of the men, we girls are still ok!.

Sadly I didn’t catch up with everyone so will be back in the near future.

Cases now all backed and we are ready for the tommrows long journey.

Ready to go
